Projects in Kenya 2022

Heart of Rut

Heart of Ruth Mission celebrated being established for 10 years in 2022, it was a big year! Board members and volunteers traveled to Kenya in April, and this was our first volunteer trip since the global pandemic. Here we spent quality time with the students we sponsor for education who live at Rainbow House Children’s Home. We took the entire orphanage to the beach twice, including healthy and fun snacks and games both days. When we first arrived, the students were just finishing their exams, so we celebrated with a large and delicious dinner of goat fry and pilau. HoRM held a 10 Year Anniversary party where the orphanage and our volunteers shared chicken, chips, and soda, which they don’t usually get to have. Sharing special meals is one way the children love to connect with us. Our volunteers help prepare everything hands on with the kids, and dance the night away with the kids when dinner is over.

When our volunteers left Kenya, the school break was over and students were returning back from their COVID national leave. Our fundraising efforts therefore went to students returning to school or starting brand new University programs for the remainder of 2022. HoRM sponsors 30 students, 5 graduated Form 4 this year (grade 12 high-school) and 7 are in post-secondary education. We held several in-person fundraisers such as our 10th Annual Spaghetti Dinner and our 5th Annual Christmas for Kenya Craft Show, as well as an online auction and online Bath Bombs for Education. Our board members and volunteers worked hard for our students in 2022 and we know they will apply themselves to the fullest in school. Looking forward to working together and helping these students achieve their education goals.

Watoto Wetu

Watoto wetu is one of the projects in Fadhili Trust that focuses on offering education support, upkeep and transport to and from school, hostel fee for those in college and shelter to a few who are truly desperate to afford. The focus of the project is to improve the livelihood of the children from the vulnerable families in the community with hope of alleviating poverty in the long run.

For the year 2022-2023, we have 33 students on education support clustered as follows:

  • Primary school – 1 student in grade 7
  • High school – 11 students
  • Post high school (waiting to join college) – 6 students
  • University / College – 13 students
  • Deferment – 1 student (who fell ill mentally)
  • Graduated – 1 student

During this academic year, one student graduated with a bachelor degree in information technology. He is currently working as a judo instructor to make ends meet as he waits to be employed.
