Devxchange and Your Role As A Project Lead

Melody · September 22, 2020

đź’ˇ What Devxchange Does

Devxchange International is a Canadian registered charity that connects Canadians with grassroots organizations worldwide to create lasting, sustainable change.
Our name, Devxchange, comes from “Development Exchange” — our founding idea that lasting change happens when people share knowledge, resources, and experience across borders.

Our motto — Helping People Help People — reflects that belief.

All Devxchange projects must align with our registered charitable purposes, which include:

  • Advancing education and vocational training
  • Improving health and well-being
  • Supporting clean water and sanitation
  • Promoting agriculture, agroforestry, and environmental restoration
  • Enhancing livelihoods and income generation

Every activity must support one or more of these charitable purposes and follow Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) guidelines for oversight, transparency, and accountability.

🌍 How It All Began

Devxchange was founded by Tom and Beth Fellows, who saw the need for a more personal and collaborative approach to international development.
After decades of humanitarian work, they envisioned a model built on direct partnerships — connecting Canadians who want to make a difference with community leaders already driving change in their own countries.

Instead of large, top-down programs, Devxchange created a framework for grassroots collaboration.
Canadians contribute skills, fundraising, and oversight, while local Implementing Partners contribute their expertise and cultural understanding.
Together, they build sustainable solutions that last long after external support ends.

👥 Your Role as a Project Lead

As a Project Lead, you are the bridge between Devxchange and your Implementing Partner.
You help ensure that every project is ethical, transparent, and compliant with CRA requirements.

Your main responsibilities include:

  • Communicating regularly with your Implementing Partner
  • Submitting project budgets and quarterly reports
  • Tracking progress through our shared planning and accounting systems
  • Collaborating with Devxchange staff through our team communication platform
  • Ensuring all project activities align with Devxchange’s charitable purposes

You’re not working independently — you’re carrying out Devxchange’s charitable activities under our registered framework.

đź’° Fundraising and Accountability

All funds raised for your project must go through Devxchange, even if a tax receipt is not required.
This ensures that:

  • All donations are recorded and receipted properly
  • Financial records are transparent and auditable
  • CRA compliance is maintained for every project

Devxchange disburses funds to Implementing Partners based on approved budgets and agreements.
With shared accounting access, both you and Devxchange can oversee spending and reporting together.

🧩 The Support Team

You’ll have a full support system behind you.
Our staff and volunteers assist with:

  • Accounting and reporting guidance
  • Fundraising and donor communication tools
  • Marketing and storytelling support
  • Help using our shared communication and reporting platforms

We work together to ensure your project thrives and remains fully compliant.

🤝 Building Strong Partnerships

Collaboration is at the heart of Devxchange.
Strong relationships with your Implementing Partner are key to long-term success.
Stay connected, listen, and learn from one another — that’s how projects grow sustainably and communities stay empowered.

đź’¬ In Summary

Being a Project Lead means combining passion with accountability.
You’re part of a global network ensuring every Devxchange project is transparent, effective, and aligned with our charitable purposes.

Together, we’re helping people help people.
