Next we need to face the facts that not everyone will say yes to supporting. In fact most people will not say yes. So knowing this upfront we need to change our definition of success when talking to someone about our projects. View the “No” to support differently. It is not your friend or colleague “rejecting” what you offered and it certainly doesn’t mean they don’t deeply care about what you said and admire the work you are doing.
A “No” might simple mean:
- No, not today but in the future i will consider it.
- I really just don’t have enough information today to make that decision.
- No, but when I donate later in the year I will remember what you said.
- I love your cause but I already give my max or support something similar.
- Ect.
Giving people a simple way to stay up to date if they are interested to ever learn more is an easy way to transition out of the conversation about asking for money and show a true desire to have the person involved in the project. Let the person know that you have a webpage and if you are on social media.
