Projects in Malawi 2022

Able Kids

The aim of ABLE Kids is to provide basic skills instruction for 100 children aged 6 months to 12 years who have disabilities as a result of birth or malaria. The program provides clinical interventions (physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech/language and hearing therapy) where needed.

The feeding program is always a main priority of our programs, as food insecurity is always present. The food budget typically takes at least half the annual budget, however, this past calendar year (2022) the food budget dropped as there were food supplies donated, which contributed a total of approx. 1,910,000.00 MK.

Through the aftermath of cyclones, drought and worsening food insecurity Victor was able to secure donations of food. The big one being Soya porridge flour. He will continue to try and find other organizations that may be interested in helping Able Kids.

Ongoing. Enrollment went up as food insecurity grew. Enrollment grew to 100 children with many times having parents hoping for a bite to eat. How can we say no. We will continue to provide nutritious meals for all of the children, and for those parents who are in need there are small amounts of food as well. If the parents don’t have some form of nutrition how can they look after their children?

One challenge that was faced was having to provide food rations to low income families during a time period when Able Kids had to shut down due to Covid restrictions. We selected the 45 poorest families and provided them with dried goods to keep them going during the 2 month shut down. These children would have really suffered without this support.

A second challenge was that we were really low on our adaptive furniture as a lot of it had been sent home with the children during Covid. It was challenging to find carpenters to have a continued supply and repair of equipment. We put the word out and did find support from numerous carpenters within the locality of our clients.
