Projects in the Dominican Republic 2021

JTCE Drug Rehabilitation

Group picture at the centre

The need for a positive and compassionate place where men can find healing and understanding is great. This year the number of men at the Centre has risen from 35 to 50. As a result more beds and more washroom facilities have been added. The outdoor covered patio has also been completed. This provides room for eating meals and for gathering for teaching and for recreation. The bakery, which is on site, has also been expanded. Men continue to contribute to the Centre by assisting in the gardening and the baking or by delivering and selling the bakery’s products to stores and residents in Santiago.

JTCE Drug Rehabilitation Centre in the Dominican Republic
The JTCE Drug Rehab Centre provides support to men of all ages who suffer from drug or gambling addictions or have behaviour problems. The program at the Centre focuses on the rehabilitation of these individuals, helping them to conquer their addiction and to return to being valuable members of society.

Pastor Jose and Lola run the Centre. They oversee the men’s progress and the bakery and the kitchen. Very few of the men are able to pay for their room and board, but those who come seeking help are never turned away. The money that we send to this project through DevXchange assists in purchasing groceries – lots of groceries – and water, propane and medicines for the men. We are also little by little paying off the mortgage on the Centre.

In 2022 Pastor Jose hopes to add more showers for the men, enlarge the garden, plant more fruit trees and continue serving the men who come to him for help.

Environmental Action Guayacanes

Environmental Action Guayacanes is a new foundation—Accion ambiental Guayacanes AAG—in the Dominican Republic. The purpose is to promote environmental awareness and to change waste management practices by facilitating community participation. Our first project is PLAYA LIMPIA: CLEAN BEACH campaign. It is a result of the endless garbage left on the beaches by the weekend crowds. It is a Public Education Campaign reaching over 100,000 beach visitors per year.
