Aquaponics Project
Empowering Communities Through Sustainable Agriculture
In 2024, our aquaponics initiative made significant strides in enhancing food security, improving livelihoods, and promoting environmental sustainability in Sierra Leone. This innovative project integrates fish farming with hydroponic vegetable cultivation, offering a climate-smart solution to rural poverty and malnutrition. More than 150 women and youth have been trained in aquaponics and sustainable agriculture, equipping them with the skills necessary to grow nutritious food and generate income.
Key milestones included the construction of fish ponds, hydroponic vegetable beds, and a hatchery, culminating in the arrival of our first fish hatchlings in December. Beneficiaries are now successfully cultivating crops such as lettuce, tomatoes, and peppers alongside fish in a closed-loop, resource-efficient system.
No project is without its challenges—consistently feeding the fish has been a significant hurdle. However, we have now acquired a feed pelleting machine, which should substantially reduce feeding costs and enhance sustainability. One ongoing concern is the necessity of fencing the site, as the open farm is susceptible to intruders and theft. Addressing this issue will be crucial for protecting the infrastructure and ensuring the long-term success of the project.
